James, while all of your points regarding Checkfree are acurate, they fail to get at the real issue...what the customer wants in this space

Tef,

To be honest, I don't know if the average consumer knows what he wants in this area because we're still in the early adopter phase IMO. That's why it will be so interesting to see how many Yahoo! users sign up for the Checkfree service in the first few months. Checkfree is not releasing any numbers on this yet because everyone that has signed up so far is taking part in a free trial and they want to wait to see how many stick after they have to start paying for the service. BTW, the way Yahoo! is rolling the service out, they are starting with a bill pay only service that will add bill presentment shortly as an enhanced service. These subscribers will start with the ability to pay all their bills and may not be too upset if they can only have a couple of bills delivered initially. Bottom line though is that 3 million consumers have already signed up for the service without a single biller holding a gun to anyone's head and forcing them to do it, so it must have SOME consumer appeal.

I did some research into the other companies you mentioned in one of your earlier posts, and as I understood it, their business models depended heavily on scanning in people's paper bills. I'll be the first to admit that I don't know the first thing about high volume scanners and that my judgement might be clouded by my belief in the Checkfree model, but I have a difficult time believing that model could scale up through an adoption tornado. I'm open to being convinced otherwise.

I continue to get the sense that you know more than you're telling about these other players. If I have to wait on the newswires I will. Still, any additional info you can provide without violating nondisclosure agreements, etc. would be appreciated.
