No matter what is special in the IDX software, if MSFT wants to emmulate it, they probably can. But I don't think they'd do that in this political climate between them and the DOJ. Heavens knows they've killed enough good software and replaced the same with excrementIMO. Paradox and Quattro Pro were replaced by access and excel. That is equivalent to replacing corvettes with crosleys. Thank God for Corel for bringing them back and soon in the Linux platform to boot. If Corel is successful look for MSFT to implode.
Another thing that may keep them form "stealing"( may not be be the correct word to use but I have an excuse, lame maybe but Jean will let me use it today) IDX's software may be because they've settled a few law suits and these settlements are influencing them to curtail their practices. In summary I think if they really wanted to they'd probably buy IDX.
Because they (MSFT) are in a clear danger of loosing their dominance in the PC OS world to Linus or linux, red hat, top hat, red herring or the likes. They( MSFT) maybe looking for the next "lock" on a market, i.e biometrics in e -commerce.
That is what scares me the most. I just hope that Randy has a corporate sized A bomb in his desk drawer or a giant cyanide pill in his shirt pocket.
