Henry,
I am not certain that the air campaign was a drag on the rest of war production. Many do not fully understand just how powerful the US was. We never even warmed up for the war. Steel production is a primary need for tanks and shipping of all kinds, aluminum is what you need for aircraft. I am not certain building one really effected the other all that much. You could probably come up with a number of good reasons for the air campaign, if for nothing else the fact that you are doing something. Another rational is that the Luftwaffe had to come up and defend their air space. One of the reasons why they had no pilots was due to the fact that they got killed in dog fights with allied fighters protecting four engine bombers. Of course the constant air battles consumed fuel and made sure pilots were thrown into battle poorly trained. One of the reasons the Japanese had aircraft at the end of the war was that they finally refused to defend themselves B-29s and carrier aircraft roamed at will over Japan. The Japanese were hoarding their aircraft for the invasion. Naturally, pilot training became practically none existent. When the US bombed Hiroshima, we sent 3 bombers by themselves. The Japanese picked them up on Radar and did not attempt any kind of interception, deeming them merely a recon fly by. That should tell you something right there. They could not even get it together to shoot down 3 lone bombers with no fighter escort.
