Hi Jim.

No, never said it was JUST IBM...

I think IBM, HP, UniSys and others are all in the same boat.

Their Unix sales are getting killed by SUN , and to a lesser extent, Linux (or "unix on training wheels")

I'll say it again...

1- Mainframes/Minis: a replacement/slow growth area. Affected: HP, IBM

2- Intel/x86 servers: growing area, getting better, slight Y2k slowdown but internet buildout continuing.
Leaders: ComPaq ("best"), dell (very close, very, very close) Losers: IBM, HP, DEC (before Compaq buyout)

3- Unix-based servers (Non-X86): massively growing area
Leaders....: guess who.......... SUNW, that's it
Losers:
IBM (RS-6000 family/AIX P.S.: crap),
HP (overpriced, limited functionality crap and they screw their partners, a la EMC, with Hitachi. Maybe INTEL too with MERCED, who knows.)
SGI (totally demolished),
DEC/Compaq Alpha, Unix X86(a disaster)

That's my take on it, based on my experience and my industry knowledge...

Did you know SUN sells several BILLION $ worth of NETRA servers, that are used in almost all BELL CO's in the USA and Canada. Add that, with the Internet buildout (18 of 20 ISP's use SUN hardware), and SUN will keep on trucking.

Next Year, once the Y2K settles, watch out !

SUN will have escaped most of the Y2K damage, and will be in EVEN stronger position to grab business from some of those delayed-for;y2k IT projects.

Yep, you should have bought SUN this year, but it's not too late. Add some INTC and MSFT as you are at it, because from what I am seeing at the companies I work for, there is going to be ENORMOUS pent-up, backed up demand for IT stuff, starting next year.

New Corporate PC's
New OS's rollouts i.e. Win2000 for PC's and the new "NT"
large new IT projects , so E-Commerce, SAN's, and telecoms

BFN
take care

Jean

P.S. I would stay away from HP, IBM, (not sure about CPQ) if I was you.IBM is dishonest about it's financials and HP just does not know where it's going. CPQ has one hellaciously good X86 server business, but their PC business is a disaster (not direct enough). Just Don't know...

Stay SUN, EMC, CSCO, DELL, MSFT if you want to make out like gangbusters next year.
