Shaking hands with strange men ...

Traditional etiquette requires of gentlemen that they not shake hands with women unless the woman offers her hand first. Ladies are not supposed to offer their gloved hands to shake, but only to be kissed. The gentleman is supposed lightly to touch the lady's hand with his and make a gesture of a kiss (no lip smacking, please). Frenchmen are allowed to touch the glove with their lips. Women of the street are allowed to offer their ungloved hands to be kissed. Frenchmen and seamen are allowed to lick the fingers lightly.
