Pompsander,

Forgive me for translating into the way I've learned to hear Rambus news now. Seriously, that is what I hear -- Rambus is headed for niche-dom -- and Intel is returning to reality.

Has Intel ever made a statement like that before regarding Rambus? Their previous concessions were "we will consider supporting PC133 for some platforms". Then it was "we will support PC133 in 2000". Now you have a second failed Camino launch, rumors that the Samsung RDRAM's don't work, and today Hitachi coming out with samples of "new RDRAM". What was wrong with their OLD RDRAM? Seriously!

Sherry Garber said back in January that the thing is too damn expensive. She was being realistic and it turns out she was right. She wasn't a Rambus-basher -- she was simply right. I think it would be wise to listen to what she's saying now.

Now Intel is saying "we'll listen to what the market is telling us". That's what everybody said we should have done a while ago but we had our own ideas and naturally they came first. We still like our ideas but they are hurting us and everybody else so we'll backburner them for a while.

I don't remember if they mentioned DDR yet, but it's inevitable. This is what everyone's been waiting for/dreading: Intel to say they would support alternatives to RDRAM for highend applications (since that's where RDRAM was targeted for the time-being). Well you just heard it. Or I heard it.
