Tomato,
I agree with you. If his picks are so successful, why doesn't he just buy his own choices, and not bother with his newsletter etc. It's the same for all the others. I don't know if you followed the Granville thread, but here was a guy who started up on SI for a while, before directing every one to his paid service. On the way, he gathered a lot of new subcriptions, but his usual response on SI was that he didn't follow company xyz etc, i.e., he wasn't giving anything away for free. I played devils advocate once, and asked him what a novice speculator should do by way of selling AFTER profits have been made. He offerred nothing intelligent. Don't get me wrong, Granville is a nice guy, and although I am sounding quite critical of late, my feelings are that politeness has its limitations. I was equally punishing of 'the Florida Wind' newsletter writer under the FLA forum. I received a lot of disparaging remarks on that forum, but I believe that I was vilified after the securities commision in the US forced him to pay $160,000 for false representation and blatant stock promotion. Of course, I myself am open to criticism, but I feel this is positive on the whole for ones psyche (spelling?). I agree with you that in spite of a lot of filtering that has to be done on material submitted to SI, it is on the whole a very informative and timely forum for discussing junior issues. Prior to this, none of us could communicate our likes, dislikes, and forgivings about newsletter writers, stocks, promotions, and the like. However, I get disturbed by some postings which suggest that some SI subscribers are attaching more significance to certain individuals on SI. To me, that is again negating ones own decision making process, and relying on a 'trust me' sort of 'journalism'.
Regards,
