Brian, <I guess Intel doesn't upgrade to the latest chips very often for the in house engineers.>

That's false. Our desktop NT machines don't need the latest chips because they function more-or-less as dumb UNIX (and Netscape) terminals. Our HP-UX workstations which we connect to are pretty powerful, and in fact, we have much more computing power available for simulations than most other companies.

Many of my coworkers, however, have the privilege to get the latest-n-greatest on their desktops. Back during the Pentium III launch in Q1 1999, my coworker called me up and bragged about his new Pentium III 500 machine on his office desktoop. That guy also gets the latest-n-greatest laptop to play with, but not me!

Anyway, it all depends on need. Do I need a laptop? Not really. Do I need a faster desktop machine in my office? Perhaps. But what I need the most is computing power for simulations, which is currently being met with HP-UX workstations sitting in some computer room.
