Tomas and all,

I think it is supremely hypocritical of Madeleine Albright et al to single out TLM for criticism. Why is there no public condemnation of China or Malaysia? I'm not saying that they are any more responsible for Sudanese public policy than Talisman. They are not. I just want to know why is there no public condemnation?

And it is insanity to think that TLM can force a change in Sudan by the threat of divestiture. They can't take their investment in infrastructure with them if they divest. Someone else will surely continue to milk the cow that our company has already bought and paid for.

Another absurdity is the accusation that Talisman is perpetuating the civil war by sharing revenue with the Sudanese government. Talisman is merely helping a country extract the value of its natural resources. TLM has no say in how the money is spent. This conflict is being fought by two sides. Where do the rebels get the their money for weapons? Who finances them? I'll wager their weapons are purchased with donations from the same places that criticize the north for having and using weapons. I have to think that the parties who arm the rebels can take some of the blame for the ongoing conflict.

I don't condone oppression of any kind. Don't ever get the idea that I do. I just don't believe that Talisman's participation in oil production is a negative for the country. I feel that they can be a positive Western influence -- probably more so than whoever would pump the oil in their absence.
