Why not make the RAM non-volatile? It would eliminate the need for a back-up power source altogether.


Non volatile memory requires more power to write and is slower - ok for disk type storage but not for memory that is constantly being read and written to by the cpu unless you like hour glasses and frequent battery changes:-)
