>>Exactly my point from the beginning.... modest preparations cost a few hundred to a few thousand depending on your desires and abilities.... a very cheap cost for peace of mind and hedge against trouble to save your family alot of possible pain.<<
Jeff, you've summed up my beliefs precisely. I consider myself to be above average in terms of actual knowledge about Y2K problems, stemming from the years I spent as a programmer and engineer in the '60's and early '70's.
Today, I believe that there will be Y2K problems. I believe that the only questions are where they will occur, when they will begin, and what their duration will be.
I have taken the preparations and precautions I have not because of my supposed knowledge, but simply because I'm risk-averse. I'm in the Northeast. It will be freezing. I said "do I want to spend even one night in the high school gym with 500 people coughing?" and said, "nope!" so I've taken precautions.
My kids are grown and live in very warm states, so I don't have to worry about them. In my home, I've provided for my mother-in-law, an elderly cousin, some neighbors and quite a few friends who know that they're welcome....I'm not sure how long my loaves and fishes will last, but I trust that they will suffice :)
The other reason, of course, is that it has given me an excuse to invite kholt and Cheeky Kid, plus a few other SI members, to my home in the event of Y2K problems. How would I ever have found another excuse to do that???
