The ink can be magnetic. Ever hold a magnet in front of a TV screen? I did. Everything distorts. We do a technique closely related to MRI (except it doesn't image) to check identity and purity of the compounds we whip up. Anything magnetic (like dirt or a metal flake) really screws with the instrument. The neatniks filter their samples. me, I just run it through again.
