woo ha ha! im doubled up laughing here..

"..They better apologize to Gates for even thinking such a notion."

your not trying to imply that Microsoft has a "monopolistic" ability to hurt Compaq by witholding Windows and upping up their licensing fees if they dare to leave the fold? Gee Dale, pride cometh before the fall in Redmond (or so says Judge White)

".. MSFT is very good at setting
standards"

arent tcp/ip, HTML, Corba and Java Standards? what part of the Internet depends upon Microsoft or Microsoft standards? The standards you are referring to is what Microsoft puts in place after a market is created with their proprietary api's and monopoly position of Windows (apple, netscape, aol, adobe, stac, real networks, priceline.com...the list goes on and on).

It's no surprise that the desktop software industry is dead with no one making a profit except Microsoft - traditional desktop ISV's are only beginning to recover by reinventing themselves on the web and their wary of microsoft "standards" and surprise they dont need them.
