HK stocks close up on short-covering, Wall Street

HONG KONG, Oct 29 (Reuters) - Hong Kong stocks staged a late charge to close on Friday nearly four percent higher in a rally underpinned by short-covering and by another surge on Wall Street.

The Hang Seng Index (^HSI - news) ended up 498.07 points or 3.90 percent at 13,256.95. In the broader market, advances outpaced declines by 334 to 223.

Traders said the market spiked on a combination of short-covering and Wall Street's more than two percent overnight gain.

``It looks as though sentiment in the market is getting quite a lot better,' said South China Securities director Howard Gorges, warning that he expected continued choppy trading.

The cash market lagged the futures market during the session.

``The futures are leading the way,' said Geoff Galbraith, vice president, institutional sales, with DBS Securities.
