My wife did a research study during college for one of her behaviour classes. She decided to correlate the increase in crime in America from 1965 to 1990 against the increase in minority populations. She came up with an 88% r-squared - or the increase in crime correlates very closely to the increase in minorties.

Now, this is not because minorities go around causing crime. This is because the increase in minority population is almost perfectly matched with the increase in poverty. And poverty is assumed to be a causative factor of crime.

So why were the good old days good? Because there were fewer poor people. An interesting, if politically incorrect fact.
