well, all I have to say is that ORIGINALLY when it was being formed it was not very powerful... In fact it only became powerful AFTER many were put to the sword and fed to the lions. But, yes, after it became powerful there were many times when orders came from the Vatican to "clense and purify" the faithful. But just remember, each religion/powerful organization has these periods. Just look at the Salem witch trials for instance. Or the Jyhad. Or the Protestant reformation. Or the Lutheran (lets kill my wives) movement. Or the annihillation of the Taoists. Boy, seems like we all have skeletons.

as far as the rest: It seems that you only listen to Jesus... which is fine. However, Jesus did appoint and give authority to his apostles(see 1269). That is why I believe in One Holy Apostolic Church. As far as jets - would you rather he used a rowboat? bulletproof cars - he's had many attempts on his life... it has been logical since Kennedy was shot not to be a major world leader and ride around unprotected.
Waving to his subjects - well, from my understanding he knows that to many he is a symbol of faith to many followers. But I would not say he Lords over anyone. He leaves that to the eager beaver bishops... but having known at least two personally, I don't think that they(the two I know) are any different than you or I, except that they know they are not special(which often we overlook).
I would give you that there is corruption in the church(es). But you have to give me that the church has taken certain precautions as well... learned from its mistakes if you will. It, like us, tries to learn from its mistakes.(mostly because it is made up of people just like us)
