Why didn't they just make them up? Anyone could produce something of that (doubtful) quality in a few hours. And full credit was given
to Bockler on the site.

Why not? If someone else is spinning the line you want, use it. Appearance of third party confirmation and when things blow up you can point to the third party and like the classic con, say you were duped, too.

Have you talked privately with Anthony@Pacific? He may be able to shed some light, although he is probably scared to death and wouldn't peep a word.
