I think that the real deception is coming from the government in Indo.

The area in Indo where the gold is supposed to be has long been an area of political strife which the government has never had full control. The "strife" has at times been violent and is a potential threat to the government, especially if it contained a gold find of world class size. Money would flow into the area, and the end result could be a new more serious threat to the existing government as the area becomes more strategic.

Freeport has had a long relationship with the Indo government, and I believe that the Indo government said to Freeport "When you drill for gold you will find none".

Now this is not so hard to do. Freeport drilled 1 inch diameter holes verses 3 inches of Bre-x! Any geologist will tell you that this is a major difference. Combine this with an over aggressive washing program, a poor drill crew etc., and it is not that hard to do. It would be easier for the Indo government to fix seven drill holes than for Bre-x to fix 100 miles of core.

The most likely scam is that the extremely corrupt Indo government pressured or influenced Freeports results for the purpose of discreditting Bre-x and scare people out of the area, or to gain more control. This is a country where the government has a history of corruption and murder to further political goals.

To me this plot makes the most sense.

Bre-x is being played with, and their geologist was murdered.
