Dont know if this was posted yet, but it seems CPQ has other biometric friends. Viisage Wins $9 Million Contract

LITTLETON, Mass., Oct. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Viisage Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq: VISG), a leader in the emerging field of biometrics technology and in providing identification systems and solutions, today announced that it has been awarded a subcontract to design, develop and implement a new digitized drivers license system for the State of Maryland Department of Transportation and Motor Vehicle Administration (MDOT/MVA) as part of the state's program to replace its current motor vehicle system. In partnership with Compaq Computer (NYSE: CPQ), Viisage will replace and streamline the driver's license issuance portion of the state's system. Compaq, a Houston-based information technology products and services provider, is the prime contractor for this $40 million motor vehicle system project.

The new computer system architecture will provide a flexible, highly functional, cost-effective client-server environment to run MVA's business processes. The Driver Licensing System will replace the existing photo licensing system, eliminate the existing mainframe batch system and create new interfaces to a number of other state systems such as Motor Voter and the Social Security Administration interface. The contract also includes a new Point-of-Sale system with new functionality for MDOT's Financial Management Information System.

Compaq Computer's Director of Professional Services, Kevin French, said, "We are pleased to partner with Viisage on this important project because they have the experience and credibility in providing leadership technology and solutions to the motor vehicle industry. Our combined skills will enable Maryland to achieve its visionary approach to modernizing its motor vehicle system and deliver an enhanced level of service to the state's drivers."

Tom Colatosti, Viisage President and Chief Executive Officer, said, "We are excited about the opportunity to partner with a technology and service leader like Compaq to provide the state of Maryland a cost-effective and flexible system that delivers a secure and durable driver's license."

Colatosti went on to say, "This award increases our leadership in the driver's license industry in terms of market share and market recognition. We have demonstrated our ability to be competitively successful in both direct driver license projects and in partnerships with large world-class companies for larger system integration programs."
