Felix, RE: In my opinion, the brokerages know in advance of the analysts comments, or downgrades and either buy or short the stock on the basis of that "advance information."

That I'll buy, to a certain extent. It goes on a lot on the long end, but almost never on the short end. An affiliated money manager may sell off a little of a long position, though.
