Corel is doing all it can to be a leader in the software industry. However, they have major problems:
1. Weak earnings.
2. Bent on competing against MSFT straight on in the suite market. Corel, unfortunately, neither have the resources or clout of MSFT for this head on competition. I am not saying they should not try to capture as much as they can from the suite market from MSFT, but they should do it without over-spending on advertisements to keep up with MSFT.
3. Although Dr.Cowpland is a very intelligent person, however, he does not know how to convince the institutional holders of the value of his company. In his "Forbes" interview he responded to what happens if Java does not become popular, by a one liner "we will be in trouble." Such a one line response should never be made by a CEO who understands how easy it is to spook the shareholders.

I think on the long run Corel will do just fine, but I doubt that we will see great improvement in stock value very soon. 4 to 6 months ago the stock was valued at $10.70 - $11.10 when the company was not doing as well, all I hope now is to see the shares trading at these values and I will feel less nervous about the future of this holding in my portfolio. In the past we have seen the stock run from $8.70 to $11.10 in a matter of days, with no news to back the movement of the shares. Maybe soon we will see that run again.
