While it is true that the market for Western goods is hardly anything right now, the companies probably hope that once the economy is thrown open to foreigners, there may be growth in incomes which in turn would spur spending.

Hey DIPY:

You still have hope that the incomes will grow in India. Aren't you too generous. Or is it temporary amnesia?
Like Rational said, the Americans don't understand the Indian mind. One American company marketed rice cereal for breakfast. It was a flop. Why would an IDDLY-eating Indian switch to cereal with milk? One company marketed chewing gum. It surmised that Indians are chewing people. Remember the PAN. But it was a flop. The don't chew gum, but they chew pan.
You can't transplant American eating habits or anything else without cultural reference. That is where the American companies need an Indian to market their products. An Indian would know what will sell and what will not.
