re: DTV. Putting analog protocols to work to bring about Digital TV. [ ? ]

Dave, I can see the natural need to employ analog fomrs of RF modulation (VSB, FDM, OFDM, COFDM) on over the air systems.

But how about the HDTV, DTV formats on cable? Do you foresee a time when MSOs will deploy systems that utilize true bipolar NRZ or multilevel digital formats on fiber, since fiber is now being brought out in record fashion deep into the neighborhoods? Or are we looking down the road at sustained use of RF mod techniques, consistent or similar to those which are listed above, for as far as the eye can see, even with a telescope.

I'm curious to know what's over the horizon, once the existing platforms approach exhaust, or demonstrate other negative attributes in comparison to other alternatives. Even if you just list proposed solutions that are nascent or in their conceptual stages. Care to comment?

Regards, Frank Coluccio

ps - I know that by asking this I risk the possibility of resurrecting the classical discussion on the differences between digital and analog properties and attributes. And if that be the case, I nominate you to moderate that discussion. I'm sure I will hear someone shout out seconds. smile
