Bank Bali Report Implies Scandal
By GRAINNE McCARTHY
Associated Press Writer
JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) -- Several Indonesian officials, including the head of the central bank and advisers to ex-President B.J. Habibie, should be investigated for possible links to a scandal at Bank Bali, an international audit recommended.
A report by PricewaterhouseCoopers, obtained by Dow Jones Newswires on Friday, says the equivalent of $80 million transferred out of Bank Bali to a company with ties to the former ruling Golkar Party made its way into dozens of domestic and foreign bank accounts. The accounts include those of former legislators and the party itself.
Opposition figures have alleged that the transfer out of Bank Bali was intended to help finance Habibie's failed election campaign.
The scandal has derailed Indonesia's bank restructuring program and shaken investor confidence in the country. The government, under new President Adburrahman Wahid, has pledged to publish the audit and pursue the culprits.
The International Monetary Fund has demanded that the government make the report public as a precondition to a resumption of its loan program, which was suspended when the scandal broke earlier this year.(cont)
