German Minister Calls For Economic Sanctions On Russia Over Chechnya BERLIN, Oct 30, 1999 -- (Agence France Presse) German Economic Cooperation Minister Heidemarie Wiczoreck-Zeul has called for economic sanctions against Russia over its offensive in Chechnya, in an interview Saturday in the daily Magdeburger Volksstimme. Wiczoreck-Zeul, a Social Democrat, bemoaned the fact that Moscow continues to receive financial aid aimed at stabilising its economy while it conducts a war against its own people in the breakaway republic. She called for financial aid to be linked to the respect of human rights. "In order to do so, pressure must be put on (Moscow) and on international financial institutes," she said.
