Several of the smaller firms I've dealt with contracted out their DD factfinding (obviously not the decision making) to law firms, industry "experts" and the like. The firm is still responsible, but often smaller ones don't have the in house expertise to conduct various industry-specific due diligence reviews. Given the proliferation of newsletters, IMO the only qualification is to have a word processing program on your computer, a printer and someone to help stuff envelopes.
