I have noticed more rational pricing of drives in the distribution channel as well. When you factor in the increased data per platter it appears that drives have come up in price by about $10 per drive. That is just enough to turn companies like Maxtor and HDD from money losers to right around break even. If you consider that both of these companies have recently introduced lower cost platforms it is reasonable to suggest that they could actually make a little money this quarter. I think Hdd said that they expect their loss this Q to be less than half last Q's loss. If price stability in the distribution channel is any indication of better pricing at the OEM level then HDD could do even better than that.
