As you can see the people of Ai had come out against Israel before and who knows what they would do. God had a purpose IMO regarding the Israelites and the Messiah so they were lead and protected. These people were pretty barbarrack in those days. At least they did not have the high powered weapons we have today. Have you seen Dances with Wolves? One of my favorites but it is hard to watch these soldiers claim to be superior to the Indians as they were killing them.
Again I would say that the Jews just want a home and were not accept at all and after their experience they felt they had to fight or be destroyed literally.
Actually there a re many OT verses that command giving a corner of your fields to the poor and to being just and compassionate to all unless you were Joshua or Saul.
