<<I disagree with your premise of there being more murders in cities around the turn of the century (and before) than at present.>>

An example, Herman Mudgett, aka, HH Holmes, was Americas most prolific serial killer. He murdered approximately 200 people during the Chicago worlds fair in the 1880's (90s?). Also, this was before forensic science could be used to tell if a crime even happenend. You could get away with, "My child fell down the steps and died!", when bruises covered almost all her body.

<<Corruption, absolutely...was it as great as today???...I don't know>>

This is why they wrote the Taft-Hartly and other anti-monopoly acts. It was much worse than today. JP Morgan practically ran the economy (inflation adjusted, the richest man to ever live). Of course, we still didn't have presidents that sold military secrets then however.

I agree with you about influenza. Did you know that it didn't even exist in humans until the 1870s? It is probably still the most dangerous virus out there because of its rapid mutation and high tranmissibility.

I can't remember if it is a song or a saying. "Why wish for the good old days, when you can make them today?"
