It was much worse than today. JP Morgan practically ran the economy (inflation adjusted, the richest man to ever live). Of course, we still didn't have presidents that sold military secrets then however. I agree with you about influenza. Did you know that it didn't even exist in humans until the 1870s? It is probably still the most dangerous virus out there because of its rapid mutation and high tranmissibility. I can't remember if it is a song or a saying. "Why wish for the good old days, when you can make them today?"
