I have a copy of Asbury's The Gangs of New York. What a fun book! The book is filled with guys like Gyp the Blood, Louie the Lump, Dopey Benny, etc.

It's interesting that during the period covered (post Civil War-1920's) the biggest and most corrupt gang was in Tammany Hall. The cops on the beat were just another gang.

At the end of the book there is a glossary of 19th century New York street slang words. That alone was worth the price of the book!
