TI's Industry-Leading DSP Platform Hits $1.5 Billion Mark in Design-Ins
Leading Telecom Equipment Providers, ADSL Vendors and Emerging Technology Companies Make Up Broad Customer Base
HOUSTON (October 29, 1999) -- Demonstrating rapid market adoption, Texas Instruments' (TI) (NYSE: TXN) high-performance digital signal processing (DSP) platform has been chosen as the processor solution in $1.5 billion worth of design ins. Since its launch in February 1997, the TMS320C6000 DSP platform has quickly gained broad industry acceptance from customers in the wireless, networking and telecommunications infrastructure markets, as well as start-up companies in emerging technologies, for applications where real-time high performance is critical. Currently eight of the top 10 wireless communications equipment manufacturers are designing TI's 'C6000 DSP platform into their 3rd-generation wireless base stations, and many top digital subscriber line (DSL) modem and PC vendors, including Ericsson, Siemens and IBM, are developing modem technologies based on these chips. TI's DSPs also enable super-fast Internet connections that combine voice, data and images over a single line, such as voice over Internet protocol (VoIP).
TI's 'C6000 platform is the world's highest-performance family of DSP products. TI has been shipping full-volume quantities since April 1998 and the product line is being designed into new applications at a rate five times faster than any previous DSP in TI's history. Since February 1997, TI has introduced eight new 'C6000 products, and more new family members are slated to be added to the code-compatible product line over the next few years, ensuring customers' investment protection. Additionally, TI's 'C6000 product roadmap calls for performance to increase 10 times before 2002.
"It takes a very strong commitment to DSP technology to see the gains in market acceptance that TI has achieved since the 'C6000's introduction," said Mike Hames, vice president, worldwide DSP manager. "TI has invested more than $100 million in the 'C6000 DSP platform, with a full commitment toward building on that success through our product roadmap."
"Ericsson is working actively to grow the market for ADSL," said Kurt Krueger, director, Wireline Access, Ericsson Inc. "TI's chipset, with its DSP engine and software upgradability, extends the life of our product. With the help of TI's DSP-based ADSL technology, we also can offer our customers a cost-competitive advantage and ensure faster time-to-market."
More than 5,000 designers are currently programming on the 'C6000 DSP platform, and that number is growing on average by 10 new programmers per day. TI has made platform development easy by providing a compiler that is five times more efficient than anything else available on the market. In addition, TI has the industry's largest third-party network, which provides thousands of products designed to make developing with TI DSPs simple.
DSPs are powerful, specialized semiconductors that are ideal for very fast, math-intensive computing. They are used in a variety of electronic devices such as cellular phones, modems and hard-disk drives, and are the key technology behind the digitization of electronic end-equipment. TI has established itself as the premier provider of DSP solutions, with 47 percent of the worldwide DSP market in 1998, according to the industry analyst firm Forward Concepts.
