Ray, Kenneth, there is a danger in generalizing, here.

Aside from the fact that different MSOs, and different locales (CA vs USA), say, might be using different VoIP and QoS protocols and tricks, there are also a half dozen or more popular channel plans (channel allocation and administration schemes) at play, depending on who is implementing them, each with their own parameters and overall architectures.

What you can say for a straight FDM system cannot be applied to an ATM scheme, such as CMTO's, which is still different (primarily in the upstream in some implementations) from that of TERN.

In other words, a decent treatment of this subject would require a comparative analysis, understanding each approach, first, on their own merits, and then comparing the means by which they adopt VoIP and other forms of digital content. Once there, QoS and prioritization schemes used by each can be examined.

Denver, Dave, bear me out on this, if you would. If I'm mistaken, please let us know.

Regards, Frank Coluccio
