JPR: Regarding Pope and Diwali, well you know what they say 'when in Rome be a Roman' or something like that. I don't think this 'Diwali' thing will placate the VHP/RSS guys, they probably will say it is a ploy by Pope and the gang to 'entrap' the people. As for the marriage ceremonies of Muslims/Christians etc having Hindu 'features'- naturally - for one thing they are as Indian as the next guy Hindu or otherwise, besides they were all Hindus at one time many many moons ago as you very well know.
