Re: you could buy mobile PCs almost immediately...

Wasn't the .18 process running (and announced) for mobile systems months before the desktops? Perhaps incorrectly, I see that as a separate launch.

Athlons were available from Cybermax, Polywell, and Cumetrix, (as best as I can recall) at about the end of August - the chips were fairly plentiful on Pricewatch by then as well. You are right that IBM and Compaq didn't show up for another month - but they were making their own motherboards and Athlon needs a radically different motherboard supporting a high speed DDR CPU to chipset channel in a point to point configuration. Coppermine can run on a BX board that provides the right voltage - a trivial change.

From the perspective of what was (and some of which still is) required to complete an Athlon launch compared to the Coppermine launch, I think it may already be too late for the Coppermine launch to have gone as well as the Athlon launch.

I expect that we will see lots of Coppermines very soon - Complete systems from most manufacturers.

But jeez, for the 650s and 700s at least, tweak a BX's voltage regulation, drop in the CPU and ship it. How hard can it be? Where are the "hundreds of thousands of CPUs already shipped?"

By the time Jerry claimed he'd shipped 200,000 Athlons, you couldn't open a newspaper or walk into a computer store without seeing one.

Regards,

Dan
