David,

OK.......Just spent 2 hours searching South Africa news sights.....

Here are the developments......

Phase 1 has been awarded to MarPless/Unisys/NEC....(800 million Rand)

Phase one was to be a mag stripe with fingerprint ID......Now, the Government wants to jump to a smart card.....a chip card.

So now the total cost will be 3 billion Rand.

The controversy now....is that the Office of Home Affairs wants to lump the smart card part into phase 1.....and just give it all to MarPless/Unisys/NEC.

Of course, there are others who want a new "tender" issued for the smart card end.....Which the Office of Home Affairs believes is not needed and a time waster.

The National Congress helped out about a week ago by moving up the timetable for HANIS.

Also....One article mentioned that the SAP (South African Police) had no intention of using the HANIS system....but said that they would use the same afis system suppliers.......cool!

I will try to go back and pick up the links......but I can only carry one at a time....and there are about 4 new articles...all interesting.

Monster program.......I think 3 billion Rand is about $900 million US.

Again...we are seeing chip cards in the news.

bg

ps. Jean.....I have no clue when anybody is going to award anything to anybody.....or that anybody will announce anything even if they do. That's why I watch the sites.......it must happen sooner or later.
