Re: take your head out of the clouds and come down for just a minute...

jmac,

When I first joined this thread around August, long before anyone imagined there could be problems with rambus ever working, my position was that rambus's price performance would keep it from being successful.

Meanwhile some other issues have arisen (the 820 3 slot problem), but they had to be eventually solvable, since there were never any questions about the 840 boards working.

So now we're back where we were last August, except that we are finally getting some real information on price and performance, and Intel has announced that it will be supporting PC133 and DDR as well as rambus.

I am quite sure that you will see a substantial increase in Rambus's stock price next week - since it had begun to look as though it might never ship at all. But as we all finally get to see some hard numbers from independent reviewers of the PC600, PC700, and the very few, very expensive PC800 systems, I expect it will become clear that the time for rambus was 3 years ago, when all DRAM cells were stuck at 100MHZ (not just rambus's) and before there were years of experience with DDR since gained from the Digital/Compaq EV6 bus.

The past month or so has been frustrating for me, as the issues that I felt were most significant regarding the future of rambus were pushed aside by the 820 problem. Now we can finally get down to evaluating it for real. Could I be wrong? Sure. Am I? I don't think so, but we'll all soon know for sure.

Regards,

Dan
