alphaworks.ibm.com "Transcoding proxies are used as intermediaries between generic World Wide Web servers and a variety of client devices in order to adapt to the greatly varying bandwidths of different client communication links. We have added a proxy transcoding module to the Apache 1.3.1 base code. The amount of transcoding that the proxy applies to downloaded images and text is specified dynamically by the user."
alphaworks.ibm.com ..."wiredAnywhere is a client/server demo based on WML (Wireless Markup Language). WML is a type of rendering markup language specifically tailored to small networked devices such as PDAs, Cellphones, etc.. You can almost think of it as HTML for PDAs. Using a WML Transcoding server, a networked client with a WML browser would be able to surf the Internet while online, and not be overloaded with large pages normally meant for PCs.
The wiredAnywhere demo consists of a WML browser client (in this case a palm pilot). The client connects to our customized WML transcoding server which will get driving directions or stock quotes from the web, "transcode" the results into WML, and send the information back to the client for rendering/browsing.
If you do not have a palm pilot and would like to try this demo yourself, you can download the palm pilot emulator from palm.com. |
