I tried changing the setting to four digits instead of two. The immediate effect was to screw up a bunch of my spreadsheets because I had column widths set just wide enough to handle dates displaying two digits for the year. When I changed the default, it increased the width of the space required and I got the "#######" display that one gets when the column is not wide enough.
