Washington Mutual Ripe for Takeover

With an excellent West Coast network of branches, thrift Washington Mutual has been an attractive takeover candidate for some time, according to Oakmark Select fund manager Bill Nygren. It may be doubly attractive now, since the imminent passage of a bill to overturn provisions of the Glass-Steagall Act should set off a wave of mergers in the financials sector. With a P/E (on estimated year-2000 earnings) of less than 10, Washington Mutual may not stay on the block long.
