That sounds silly. If the line is for 12", it will be for 12" all the way through. Using 12" equipment and qualifying it for 8" wafers is a huge waist.

As they stop wafers starts at 8", they start the upgrade as the wafers go through the system. So after the wafers clear the litho, they start replacing the steppers.

As it has already been mentioned, there are huge, fundamental differences between the 12" and 8". There will be no mix and match the equipment in the line.
