Varig Airlines Selects Unisys Corporation to Implement Secure Intranet System

Latin America's Leading Airline Poised to Take Advantage of Global Market Opportunities Through Enhanced Communications

BLUE BELL, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 1, 1999-- Varig Brazilian Airlines, the leading airline in Latin America and one of the 25 largest air carriers in the world, has selected Unisys Corporation to implement a state-of-the-art intranet system, linking Varig offices around the world.

This initiative, called Project VOA or Varig Office Automation, will deliver a communications system infrastructure that will enable Varig to take advantage of global market opportunities. The company's primary objectives for the project are to enhance internal communications, improve decision-making processes and reduce costs.

The new system, which is scheduled for implementation during the fourth quarter of 1999, is designed to increase the speed, quality and security of information access for Varig employees. Through the system, Varig employees will have corporate-wide access to the Internet. Project VOA will also create a new global e-mail system for Varig employees, with remote access capabilities for staff members working in ``virtual' locations. Employees will have access to several additional resources, such as bulletin boards to post documents or chat rooms to request or confirm any information in real time.

``The implementation of Project VOA is key to our continued success and a cornerstone of our strategy to compete on a global scale into the next millennium,' said Fernando Pinto, chief executive officer of Varig. ``The new system will enable more efficient communication, resulting

in better processes and decision making. As a result, our customers should benefit from improved service. In the next phase of the project, we will explore the possibility of linking the system to the Star Alliance through a private extranet, enabling better communication with our airline partners.``

Unisys will host and manage the system for Varig on Aquanta (SDT/NT) Enterprise Servers, providing operational support 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Varig will be able to take advantage of the enhanced security of the Unisys system, which uses Firewall One and Real Secure to detect any external intrusions. Varig employees will have access to high-availability Microsoft applications including a messaging system operated through MS Exchange. The system will be installed at Unisys and will be linked to the Varig computer network through high-speed fiber optic links. During the initial phase of the project, 3,000 users will have access to the system.

``Project VOA demonstrates Varig's commitment to invest in technology solutions in order to achieve new levels of operational efficiency and employee productivity,' said Victor Reis, general manager of Unisys Brazil. ``We are proud that Unisys was selected by Varig for this project because of our experience in enterprise-wide information technology outsourcing and network integration.'
