Andreessen Launches Second Start-Up (10/26/99, 4:08 p.m. ET) By Stuart Glascock, TechWeb Marc Andreessen, the co-founder of Netscape Communications and most recently the chief technology officer of America Online, has assembled a strong cast of software and operations experts to launch Loudcloud, a technology and services start-up.
Andreessen and a team of well-known managerial and technical authorities formed the Menlo Park, Calif.-based company to help Internet businesses manage the ever-increasing complexity of running large-scale, transactional websites. Andreessen's second start-up includes executives from companies such as Netscape, Frontier GlobalCenter, Epiphany, Morgan Stanley, Infoseek, Cisco, and others.

IXC Communications Inc. has a pretty clear game plan and some pretty clear resources. It has 13,000 miles of fiber, OC-192 (10 Gbit/s) running on its backbone, and plans to run IP directly over dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) systems. But that doesn't mean it isn't interested in new angles. Look at its new niche strategy for the applications service provider (ASP) business.
This Texas carrier plans to target Fortune 501 to 2000 businesses by partnering with ASPs. IXC will let these partners leverage its managed high-speed IP capabilities as an outsourced applications delivery channel. The sales pitch will focus on providing innovation, service, reliability and, of course, price/performance. IXC and its teammates, in effect, will customize their offers for businesses that often get short shrift from the major carriers.
