Unisys Awarded $67 Million Contract to Help Complete IT Infrastructure Modernization at Social Security Administration

Unisys will install local area networks and hardware under the Intelligent Workstation/Local Area Network (IWS/LAN) Phase II program

McLean, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 1, 1999-- Unisys Corporation today announced that is has been awarded a three-year, $67 million contract from the Social Security Administration to provide a full range of hardware, software, services and turnkey solutions as part of the IWS/LAN Phase II program.

The indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity contract calls for Unisys to install 279 LANs with 6,600 Pentium III workstations, networking hardware, high- and low-end servers, printers, notebook computers, associated peripheral devices and software.

Unisys will provide support services including installation, maintenance, relocation of equipment, documentation and technical support. They will also help SSA procure hardware, software, customized training and technical services to support IT initiatives for employees with disabilities.

Key subcontractors such as Compaq, IBM, Dell, Cisco, CompuUSA, Compucom, LSI and Lexmark will provide hardware and additional services.

SSA employees at the regions, state disability determination offices and other federal, state and local agencies that do business with SSA will be supported by this equipment and services.

``This is an extremely significant award for Unisys because the IWS/LAN Phase II program will be an important information technology procurement vehicle for SSA for the next three years,' said Ed Hogan, vice president of marketing, Unisys Federal Systems. ``We would not have been awarded this contract without our strong performance on the Phase I program.'

The Phase II program follows a $280 million, seven-year Phase I contract that Unisys was awarded from SSA in June 1996. Under that contract, Unisys installed 1,742 LANs, 70,624 workstations and connected and trained some 68,000 SSA employees throughout the continental United States.

That program, which the SSA has called one of the ``greatest technological and workload accomplishments' in its history, was completed on schedule and on budget.

``In completing IWS/LAN Phase I, the SSA accomplished what many in government said could not be done,' said Hogan. ``In two-and-a-half years, they completed one of the largest technology upgrades in government history -- taking their employees from dumb terminals to modern information technology that has significantly improved their ability to provide services to the citizens. They achieved this unprecedented technology overhaul without any major service interruptions to the public while continuing their normal daily workload that includes handling 250,000 phone calls, processing 20 million real-time transactions and transferring three billion bytes of data,' he said.
