AboveNet Provides Internet Connectivity for HP Cartogra Photo Web Site

AboveNet's Network and Co-location Services Will Help Enable an Enjoyable Online Digital-imaging Experience for HP Cartogra Users

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 1, 1999-- AboveNet Communications Inc., a subsidiary of Metromedia Fiber Network, Inc. (Nasdaq: MFNX - news) and the architect of a global one-hop network that brings together high-bandwidth content sites, ISPs, and Application Service Providers in centralized co-location facilities, announced today that Hewlett-Packard Company has selected AboveNet to provide co-location and Internet connectivity for its innovative HP Cartogra photo Web site. Launched today, the Cartogra photo Web site, cartogra.com, enables users to share photos with others via email and through online communities by making it easy to upload and post photos from any PC, digital camera or scanner. In addition to hosting the Cartogra Web servers, AboveNet will provide Cartogra with a superior network that enables Cartogra users to quickly and reliably access photos, save them and send them to others.

''HP wants to make it as easy as saying 'point and shoot' to share photos over the Web,'' said Dan Gilbert, general manager of HP's Internet Imaging Operation. ''For that reason, we looked for an Internet connectivity and co-location provider with a reputation for dependability. AboveNet met our high standards for quality and reliability, which our customers have come to expect from HP.''

As announced by HP in August, the Cartogra site is part of HP's digital-imaging strategy, which leverages HP's leadership in digital cameras, desktop printers and Web Services.

According to Van Jepson, AboveNet Vice President of Marketing, AboveNet's non-stop, fault-tolerant facilities and high bandwidth Internet connectivity allow companies like HP to build profitable and enduring relationships with their customers when introducing new Web services.

''When visitors to a Web site know they will be able to retrieve the information they want quickly the first time--and every time--they come to that site, they are more likely to come back,'' said Jepson. ''Winning and keeping customer confidence is what AboveNet's superior network is all about.''

AboveNet's Global ''One-Hop'' Network

AboveNet's unique network model enables it to offer one hop connectivity and network performance to its clients. At each of AboveNet's ISX facilities, content and service providers connect to each other in a LAN environment and then directly connect to the rest of the Internet through an extensive network of more than 273 private and public peering agreements with all of the top ISPs and backbone providers worldwide. This architecture can reduce the multiple network hops information often takes to reach its final destination on the Internet, and can allow AboveNet to keep the information intact on its network until it can be delivered as close as possible to its final destination. The resulting ''one-hop'' network is highly redundant and is designed to deliver superior network performance.

AboveNet further ensures the performance of its network by providing its clients access to its significant bandwidth, which currently totals over 18.2 Gbps--the most bandwidth available on-demand at any co-location facility. AboveNet guarantees 100% headroom on its network so that its clients will have the bandwidth they need as they grow.
