SPECTRUM Invests in Education and Internet-2 Research
Sponsors National Scholarship Program Supporting Next-Generation Network Management and Internet Technologies
DURHAM, N.H.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 1, 1999--SPECTRUM today announced that it has granted seven scholarships to graduate students at universities across the nation researching advanced management techniques and Internet-2 technologies.
''Supporting research that has an eye toward next-generation management like Internet-2 and GigaPOP management will keep SPECTRUM ahead of the management technology curve,'' said Dr. Lundy Lewis, SPECTRUM's director of research. ''We are proud to contribute to universities across the country focusing on these technological advancements that will ultimately change the face of research, education and global communication.''
Grant funding was made possible by SPECTRUM and Cabletron Systems' Scholarship Program. The program is in cooperation with the North Carolina Networking Initiative (NCNI), a collaborative effort between North Carolina Research-1Universities and high-technology industries to explore and develop leading-edge network technologies, engineering and applications.
Students receiving SPECTRUM scholarships will explore cutting-edge topics in network and enterprise management, including Internet-2, advanced Quality of Service and software aging. Students were selected from several universities renowned for their advancement of information technologies, including Duke University, North Carolina State University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Georgia Institute of Technology, California State University and the University of New Hampshire. The scholarships are effective through the 1999-2000 academic year.
''Georgia Institute of Technology is proud to be part of the SPECTRUM Scholarship Program,'' said Professor Mani Subramanian, Georgia Institute of Technology. ''The research granted by Cabletron is a strong affirmation of the need for academic programs in network management, and goes a long way in finding solutions for managing next generation networks.'' Professor Subramanian is among the recipients of the SPECTRUM Scholarship Program and is currently involved in establishing a network management program at the Georgia Institute of Technology.
