JDSU competes with virtually everyone of its major customers - LU, NT, Fujitsu, Alcatel etc. Most of this is obviously for their captive operations, but nevertheless they can source inside instead of outside. NT and LU have huge captive component businesses - but the systems divisions can use whomever they want. If they can get a better product in less time (note - not necessarily for less money) - they will. NT buys 980s from JDSU but competes with them on the EDFAs they go into. They also make their own source lasers. Btw, NT and LU also occasionally sell to each other.
As was mentioned earlier, merchant suppliers account for maybe 50% of components now - this will go to 70%+ in a 2-3 years - this is akin to the ASSP silicon cycle that is driving the businesses of PMCS, AMCC, VTSS CNXT etc. Btw, one of PMC's biggest competitors is LU. They are also their biggest customer. Gee, sound familiar?
So pleeeeeeeease - stop the chorus about JDSU having no competition. They do - so does everyone! But there is so much opportunity and they have such a broad portfolio, that they are indeed the preeminent supplier in the world.
