Exactly David. I just wanted to play with the numbers so they stick in our minds rather than completely ignored. If the advertising stops, what would happen to earnings? Those are the kind of questions I was trying to answer for myself.
Most important is a formation of a critical mass where the advertising per existing account becomes miniscule.
About your other post about compelling deals - you are right that neither NTBK or USAB has those deals out. The best local deals I have seen are limited to Free Checking. The phenomenon I am expecting in that regard is the number of customers that become discontent with their banks over little issues like a $28 bounced check charge (4 times in a day) or ATM charges during travel to other cities. Happens in the automobile insurance industry too and I do know that the numbers in that industry are 20%. I dont know the rate in banking industry but is probably lower. Now the Gomez deal of $100 per account does have some appeal. I know first hand two college kids that opened accounts this weekend. Will the word of mouth at schools get around. Time will tell. These kids do need free ATMs because of their travels back and forth from home and school and other places.
