Jay, I like the way your mind works. And does it ever. <g> One interesting little company that I try to get a handle on from time to time is Transmeta, where Linus Torvalds hangs his hat these days. Very hush hush. Could this be part of the springboard that you describe so ably to the next level? I haven't a clue as to what these guys do, (Torvalds says: "We do stuff"), but I am convinced that the work has implications along the lines of the transendent, spontaneously organizing, ubernet you postulate. You mentions several of the University/R&D initiatives in this country. Seems to me that they may all be overtaken by events. I was quite taken aback by how far CANARIE has come with GigabitEthernet up in Canada. I'm wondering if you would care to comment about that network. It seems to work wonderfully, if Bill St. Arnaud is to be trusted, and I believe he is. Comments welcomed. Best, Ray
