Sony Says PlayStation Holiday Sales to Top $1 Billion

FOSTER CITY, Calif. -- Sony Computer Entertainment America, a unit of Japan's Sony Corp., said on Monday that sales from its PlayStation home game machine and associated products would top $1 billion for this year's holiday season.
The company says it has sold one million PlayStation units since the company dropped its selling price to $99 in August, bringing total installations in North America to 21 million, or one in every five homes.
"The retail outlook has never been better as we continue to see a strong desire for PlayStation in the marketplace," Jack Tretton, Sony Computer Entertainment's vice president of sales said in a statement.
"In November and December 1998, we sold four million PlayStation consoles," said Tretton. "We are on track in 1999 to keep up with the pace we established last year. The $99 price point, coupled with the sustained demand for the console and its games library, will result in strong sales for the PlayStation category overall."
The company has earmarked $150 million in PlayStation marketing in the holiday season.
