We have drastically different interpretations of that video. :-)
(1) I distinctly remember the video having a section complaining about the restrictions on organized Chrtistian prayer in school and concluding with a demonstration how public schools should distribute the Bible to students (as a religious state supported religion).
(2) It also taught that our founding fathers were all Bible thumping christians (in reality it was a mix of Christians, diests and atheists. The fact that they figured out how to get along without killing each other is one thing that makes our country great.)
(3)The preacher used the video in the context of supporting his sermon against the separation of church and state and saying that Thomas Jefferson was a fundamentalist Christian.
With this, I concluded that the song was just a propaganda song for the Christian right.
It really isn't as much about taste of musical styles here, but whether music is used to mislead people. If I sing along/participate with a Christian song, it must be honest and truthful, because the God we believe commands us to be. Is it not blasphemy to knowingly participate in a song that is dishonest?
You earlier personally advocated giving up secular music because you believe that music is black or white. Either holy from God or evil, from Satan. I believe this is absurd. More troublesome is that it is dangerous. Consider the logical extension of this, if people act on this belief, they will work to stamp out all (that some politio-religious leader arbitrarily determines as) evil. The people have good intentions, but have been misled by their leader :-(
Take a look a history. Chairman Mao used similar tactics. People joyfully stomped out any part of their culture that was not supportive of the state. North America had puritans coming to escape from religious persecution so they set up their own persecution. "Evil" people were exiled to Rhode Island of executed in witch trials. Luckily, our founding fathers put an end to this nonsense with the separation of Church and State. (BTW the official government Church of England trying to recruit people really helped out their cause :-)
In some ways , we are very similar. I try to be very careful to the christian music I listen to. Since I am assuming that the artist is Godly, I will intentionally open myself up to its influence when I listen to it. So, I get much more upset at deceptive christian than the disgusting secular music. Much of the secular music is trying to make a cheap buck by appealing to our base instincts/sinful nature. But the deceptive Christian music is committing blasphemey.
Wheh! wasn't that a rant :-)
Good luck, God bless. Hope this correction doesn't hurt people too much financially so they can still afford to generously give to charities. |
